I am strongly pro-Planned Parenthood, and don’t believe that telling the true, complex story of the woman who started it all diminishes its work or importance at all. I think some people believe that.

Quite frankly, it’s the complexity and contradictions that make her especially interesting — not to mention her achievements.

To be fair eugenics was a well respected science at the time. And arguably helped expand our understanding of human heredity to some extent.

The ever popular Nikolai Tesla is perhaps a better example of your point considering he was also a pretty hardcore eugenicist.

That is fucked up, but also a mainstream belief in the early 20th century. Not to excuse Sanger, but she wasn’t an outlier.

I didn’t get a sense anyone is trying to explain anything away. She is a product of the era in which she lived, although in one key area (i.e. birth control) she was ahead of her time. The argument being made is that her significant accomplishment in the latter area is overshadowed by the unfortunate espousal of ideas…

Can we agree that she was a somewhat flawed woman that ended up doing great things for women despite those flaws?

Thomas Jefferson, beloved framer, owner and rapist of slaves. His good deeds seem to weigh more heavily with history. His misdeeds should not be forgotten, and neither should Sanger’s, but her mission and organization have contributed a net positive to society, hands down.
