The chafing dish thing is pretty interesting. They’ve got a long history of use by people without access to full kitchen, staff or much in the way of kitchen skills. And a particular association with “bachelor food”.
In New York City there is scant public park space. For example, almost every blade of grass in Central Park is off-limits from October to April. But some public schools allow the public to use their grass/dirt fields, playgrounds, and basketball/handball courts on weekends.
The same thing happened to me. I went to the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk but they wouldn’t tell me how much it was going to cost because they were afraid I would just take that price and shop it around and look for cheaper milk at some other grocery store.
