Just in case anyone's curious, the umpire can call strikes like this according to rule 6.02(c).
After searching a little bit, it appears that pickup races exist only at the small town (<7000 people) rodeo that I go to on the 4th of July. If that doesn't make it redneck, I don't know what does.
Pickup racing. It's not 100% motorsport, but close enough. The guys ride horses across the arena, load the horses into a pickup truck, drive back across, then ride across again.
