It’s correct that others have noted that the Stimson honeymoon angle is not supported by the historical record, but Stimson DID visit Kyoto on several occasions in the 1920s, and I think the scene at its heart, if not factually correct, captures a more important truth about the decision of which city to bomb. Kyoto

This is a weird take for an article pointing out the collaborative nature of making movies.

even simpler mental capabilities (“It’s like a cow’s opinion. It doesn’t matter. It’s moo.”),

As always, a great post on George of the Jungle and the fact that it’s a female-gaze goldmine:

Let me solo her cosplay is peak

It’s really hard to describe the level of backlash O’Connor got from ripping up a picture of the pope if you weren’t there. Madonna criticized her (Papa Don’t Preach and Like a Prayer were her biggest videos that year). Frank Sinatra said if she wasn’t a woman he’d kick her ass. A couple weeks later she got booed off

A true artist. A massive talent. A one of a kind voice. An absolute icon. A legend. A bad-ass. A monument of standing up for your beliefs no matter what.

Truly one of the most beautiful voices and capable of such emotional depth.

That sucks. She had a hell of a “comeback” song a few years back that I love.

She had such a beautiful voice and strength.

When I first read the first sentence of this story, I thought it said she was known for “breaking the 90s.” That would certainly be accurate. My heart hurts.

This sucks.

Rest in peace.

So among the very first SNL’s I remember watching was the Andrew Dice Clay episode where she and Nora Dunn pulled out. I remember the controversy surrounding it, as well as my parents saying, “SNL is still on? But it hasn’t been funny in years.” The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Lion and the Cobra was a huge record for me as a kid, as was The Value of Ignorance VHS tape, which some kind soul has posted on Youtube. A powerful document of a fierce artist.

RIP. Very sad.

May she find the peace that so eluded her in life. Talented, principled and fierce, she will be much mourned.

As awesome and powerful as her popular music songs were, when she sang traditional Irish songs... wow. I don’t have words to describe the beauty and power, but if folks are familiar with Irish mythology, something otherworldly crossed the veil to our world when she sang. May her soul find rest and comfort.

I spent a semester in Ireland in 1990 and Sinead O’Connor was a major part of that experience. Of course her music was huge at that time. How terribly sad. This beautiful person, complicated and brilliant and troubled, gone forever. My heart is broken.
