The Industry: Design engineer in interior systems for automotive, including leather wrapped soft trim, wood, etc. I design & engineer these wood parts for both high gloss and open pore applications, the wood parts that this article discusses on a rudimentary level.
Why do you say it’s a fad? Just asking as I’m in the industry, and this stuff looks less cheezy, is just as easy to keep clean, warps less, and ages better.
You’re a fucking bafoon
I do not like carbon-fiber trim at all. It’s a wonderful material, but I’ve never considered it “decorative.” If it’s an exposed structural component of the car then that’s cool, but if it’s on display as a trim piece it looks a gaudy, contrived attempt to make the car seem sportier.
The only thing worse than wood in a performance car is when they add carbon fiber accent panels. In the pursuit of making it seem like it's a lightweight car, they add accent panels and increase the weight. Dafuq?
You know what’s really not great for gripping? Wood. You know what does provide a nice grip for your hand while making turns? Leather.
Interesting how opinions vary. I think that the Lexus pictured and it’s choice of piss-yellow wood in pursuit of a high-contrast approach looks terrible, whereas I actually quite like the Porsche interiors pictured. Maybe it doesn’t belong something like a GT3, but on lower-spec 911s, which are grand tourers more than…
Exactly! That’s crazy money for that POS.
I hate the entire current BMW lineup and I drove an M235i, M3, M4, F10 M5, X3, and X5M at the BMW Performance Center (Thermal Club).
Because its a hideous insult to god and man in the looks dept. That’s why it’s hated.
Nice thought, but as someone who bought a first year E36 M3 off the showroom floor back in 1995 and could afford a new one, the M6 doesn’t tick any boxes. The M3/M4 are too heavy and far removed from what they once were, and only the M2 sounds somewhat interesting. The DBS checks all the boxes. Modern BMW styling is…
The fake engine sound bullshit kills it.
FAKE ENGINE SOUNDS.
It’s actually smaller than the current Dodge Dart. The Falcon looks bigger because designers in the 1960s still understood how to do attractive proportions.
Society is so much more fearful now.
I feel bad for the Russian people. The whole country is on the verge of economic collapse and their leadership is burning up scant resources on this nonsense. And for what? Is the Pentagon freaking out? Is the West gearing up for a new Cold War? No. Mostly we’re just shrugging.
Dad had a large half-inch power drill — one of those two-handers with a big rear grip — in the back floorboards of the car one trip when I was, oh, somewhere in the early grades. I laid waste to half the Luftwaffe from the tail gunner position before he got a good look at this in the mirror and ended the mission…
Wow, that commercial is horrible.
I'm starting to wonder if car companies are hiring people to comment on social media. Putin style. These pointless whiny remarks such as yours are showing up more often.
