From my experience, it is European “luxury cars” (hello Volvo, Audi, BMW, and MB!!!) that suffer poor reliability. Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura....not so much. As such, the reasoning is not sound.

Other sources of high cost of living include excessive governmental regulations. A good example is “rent control” as implemented in San Francisco and Santa Monica. In both cases, the rental markets have skyrocketed specifically because “rent control” has distorted the markets.
