I think that most people get that...but some of these people just kinda want to have their cake and eat it too. Like yeah, Luke rejected the dark side and stuff! Now let’s go see him chop up some people all badass style!

And the worst part is? They got it and they still weren’t happy. They got to have that thrill of “oh shit look at how badass Luke is!” and then got to have the shock of “oh shit, look at how clever Luke is!” But for some reason, they think those two invalidate each other.

He didn’t go there to kill Ben, he didn’t “cop” to that. He went to see how far Ben had fallen...then he was shocked by the visions he got and had a flash of weakness.

Yeah, but that’s part of my point. Yes, culture matters. But the Asian people who immigrate to America are, statistically, very high achievers. Very high achievers tend to raise children that do the same.

Well that’s because falling to the dark side always sounded better than it made sense in practice.

Here’s the thing: I think a lot of those people academically get that Luke not fighting was his victory.

Ehhh I think the less Jedi training Luke got, the better. I think his issue was more that he took the lessons of the Jedi too seriously.

TLJ made me really, really disappointed Hamill didn’t have a more prolific acting career. I mean his voice work is fantastic but seeing him on camera was shocking.

Based on immigration policies and the brain drain, mainly. A very large portion of people of Asian descent living in America are immigrants or first generation Americans.

I met Papa John once.

I mean, not really. Not beyond accepting she had force powers. What action did they lead her to take, really?

Sure, but then we found out he was a virgin birth as a result of a sith lord using his powers to magically impregnate...some random slave woman.

I’ll be honest: I was, after TFA, expecting a twist in Rey’s backstory. I just never wanted it to be related to her parentage.

Seriously, people perpetually complain that these movies are “all the same” and I just do not get it. Obviously they all end in an action set piece but...that is because they’re action movies. While plenty of films have similarities to each other, there is a lot of variety to these movies.

Middle finger to TFA, sure. But how is it one to the entire franchise?

She is and she isn’t. She’s been given great power from the force as a counterpoint to Kylo Ren but...she isn’t locked into some ultimate destiny. Anakin was the chosen one and felt compelled to be. Luke at first thought Vader murdered his father and later found out Vader was his father. Both push Luke into a

Semantics. Thematically, yes, he illegally immigrated to the US.

Was it ever not a political statement?

I always liked the idea that a connection to the force was possible for everyone. Some might have a stronger affinity for it, but anyone could connect to it on some level. It isn’t like Obi-Wan said “you’re a skywalker so you can do this shit”

All entertainment is political. Even an attempt to not be political is, intrinsically, political. Your username is a Batman reference...you think there isn’t anything political about Batman? About a super wealthy industrialist using his money to fight crime?
