Most households have more than one vehicle, especially those that can afford an electric car.  Wife has electric, husband has a gas vehicle for long trips...pretty common.

I think that answer also depends on the lease rate.  If the buyer (stupidly) put money down, and they let him continue at the same rate deflated rate, it might make financial sense.  If not, he could be paying over what the depreciation is for the vehicle.  

My mother keeps leasing base model Civics every three years. Her current one is identical to the last one she had.
