I don't see it as a lo-fi mentality but more of an emphasis on art style and direction and core gameplay over realism. It is pushback over most AAA games being too focused on graphics and the whole 4k ratrace in general. Gameplay is suffering because of the overemphasis on graphics

not necessarily because the work and resources it takes studios to make things photorealistic results in costly games filled with microtransactions or games where the core gameplay is not satisfying

totally agree - I derive very little enjoyment from massively detailed textures etc and I personally think the obsession with graphic realism in gaming is one of the reasons I rarely like most AAA games. RDR2 is a prime example, they spent so much time making the grass pretty but the controls suck. what is the point…
