Truth be told, I didn't have a lot of training either. My mother took me to auditions and I passed. So my advice would be to practice singing what you love until you feel like you're ready to go out there, then search Craigslist and find yourself some musicians. It worked for me!

Start with something close to what you enjoy. There are metal genres for EVERYTHING. Hell there's Jazz metal!
