There is one model (I am a major member of her fan club) who has been modeling since she was 15. She is now 83 (yes — eighty-three) and is still modeling. I am talking about Carmen Dell Orefice. She is, well, most people don't wind up like her in any career, least of all modeling. But she has been know to say the

Ah, academics. My father told me that capitalists kill for money. Academics — they just kill. And he should know. He was an academic and a political monster. The thing is — my dad was also a genius and a true intellectual, so the fact that he could out-maneuver anyone didn't sicken me. Today, though, I see

What you said is very true and very wise. The best way to prepare them is to model the most honorable behavior — but tell them to be on their guard. Tell them they can't always expect it — but they should always be honorable themselves.

Ironic? No. Informed. Who better than a model knows that it's not all about beauty? Who better than a model knows how fleeting it is? Her career choice is wise. She chose something she is good at. She chose something she will make a lot of money doing. She did what any sensible person would do.

Thank you for posting this sensible and wonderful post! I have literally NO IDEA why people are saying some of the awful things they are saying about Doutzen Kroes — as if she, one woman, is to blame for all the ills of society. Please. She sounds like a good mother and a good person to me.

Thank you for posting what you did. You sound awesome — and really sensible. Good for you!

THANK YOU! I think Doutzen Kroes sounds like a good parent. She wants what is best for her daughter, just like a good mother should. Good for her. I don't know why people are attacking her.

What inane comment did Doutzen Kroes make? Really? Nothing she said sounded inane to me. What are you talking about? Quote that inane comment.

How? How does it make it harder to teach our daughters that it's easier to teach our daughters that it is not all about beauty? Just point out every single one of your friends and neighbors — the people in town, the teachers, everyone you daughter knows and ask her — are they using their brains or beauty to get

You are blaming Doutzen Kroes for making it harder for regular moms to "impart those lessons of brains over beauty to their daughters." That is just plain silly. An entire industry exists that sells the idea that beauty equals power, that if you have beauty you deserve love and if you don't — you deserve abuse.

A lot of people have called this model "a part of the problem" and that really bothers me. She is not a part of the problem. She didn't create the problem and it will exist with or without her. And blaming models for the fact that woman are judged for their beauty is like blaming a woman for being raped. Maybe

How is a woman doing a job that she is qualified to do and that can give her enormous wealth part of a problem? Should she NOT do it? Should she flip burgers instead because it's more fair? Ridiculous. A woman should do the very best she can do — empower herself as much as possible — and never feel ashamed of it.

I disagree. I don't think any profession that enriches women keeps them down. I think people would like us to believe that — but it's not true. We women have a huge advantage over men — even the most ordinary looking female can use her sexuality in a way even the best looking man can't — and then we are slammed for

I don't know a single teacher who wants their kid to be a teacher. A lot of people don't want their kids to do what they do because, well, they know how AWFUL their jobs are and think anything else would be better — even supermodels think that. Teachers I know beg their kids to be speech therapists of school social

I don't blame her. She knows all the horrible stuff — the Terry Richardson stuff — and doesn't want it for her kid. Really, it's just the same as teachers not wanting their kids to be teachers. Most people want better for their kids and they know the serious shortcomings of their careers and don't want their kids

Look — I am a woman. I believe you. But prepare yourself. Because, despite your eloquence and common sense, a lot — MANY — people here will not. This is the only place they get to bully and they will bully you, someone who does NOT deserve it. You sound like a good guy.

That's why people have to teach for three years before they get tenure (well, it used to be. Now no one gets tenure). The thing is, those three years really do weed out most of the total losers. It is a HARD job and those who can't do it, leave. And the crazies show their crazy early on. But now people want us

I of course want my students to like me — but that does not mean I would do anything to have them like me. No one wants to be hated. I remember this AWFUL teacher asking me my first year, "Do you want your students to like you?" I said, "Sure." This maniac flipped out on me and said, "That shouldn't matter!" You

How? HOW? Please, don't say stuff like that. Don't say stuff like, "The standards need to be higher so people like that don't get through." There are people like her in EVERY line of work — lawyers, doctors, insurance salespeople, whatever — they are everywhere. But it only when it happens with teachers that

You know, my students have urged me and urged me to cancel the midterm, the final exam, the class project — and I never, ever have. Gee — this class must have had amazing powers of persuasion, getting this horrible idiot to give one of them a lap dance. I CANNOT believe her excuse! "The told me to!" What is she?
