Write your local congressperson/senator. Send emails to the White House. Donate to organizations that are working to end family detention! Some of the orgs you can donate to are RAICES and the CARA Pro Bono Project. There are also lots of other great groups.

So who do we pressure? Who do I call / write / email? I’m asking honestly, I want names and addresses so I can do what little I can.

I’m happy to explain.

DACA is enormously beneficial for the people who took advantage of it. Clinton has pledged not to eliminate it, and indeed has said she will expand it.

Undocumented immigrant mothers children are imprisoned together.

Exactly, activism does work and it important to remember we can change what is happening. With all the BS that goes on it is easy to get discouraged and give up, but change does happen and we can be a part of it.

Thank you for doing work like this and for the differences you make in people’s lives. These are people who are all to common overlooked and people like you who do work on their behalf are a bright spot in the darkness. God that sounds cheesy, but I’m out of it from my meds and I don’t think I can phrase it better.

someone needs to do a viral blackfish/making a murderer-type doc on these facilities that gets wide viewership. Or maybe there’s been one, I dunno, that needs more publicity. It’s only when the public gets emotionally invested and signs endless petitions that this shit changes.

I couldn’t have said it better. Family detention centers are modern day internment camps. They are indefensible. But no situation is so bad that it can’t be made worse. I believe Clinton when she describes one of the possible outcomes of a Trump presidency: a militarized police force moving from house to house,

I also think that Clinton’s history of advocating for families and kids in general makes her MORE susceptible to pressure to end this practice. I’m not sure how it will work if these contracts are being renewed right now before she takes office, but when these contracts come up again she will have no excuse and

DACA would be the best and most obvious example. It was enormously bold of Obama and it was something that only came after years of lobbying and activist work.

I’m also not so keen nor quick to blame the Obama Administration per se before I know for sure that the initial contract that’s apparently being renewed wasn’t established with the DHS —itself created, so many seem to forget, pursuant to the “Patriot Act” signed into law by BUSH II - prior to Obama ever even taking

They were indeed outrageously overcharging before. For some stupid reason the contract with CCA had the Feds paying them as if the facility was 100% full, regardless of whether it actually was full. It was never 100% full.

As an immigration advocate, I can tell you that pressure works. Administration don’t want to look bad, they want to avoid negative press, and they want fundraising dollars. Votes are not the only incentive.

This is extraordinarily frustrating. I’ve been to this facility. I’ve talked to the women and children locked up there and seen their suffering and their heartache and the way they are being treated is a stain on our national character. And for the Obama administration to do this just days after their own advisory

I think it sits well with most Americans because they just aren’t interested in knowing about it, or they think someone in a detention facility deserves to be there. I will never forget my coworker who said he would shoot children who came into our country illegally.

While this is really disappointing, I think if you dig in a little, it is (marginally) more understandable. The new contract runs until 2021, so it is not long term . The issue identified in the underlying articles appears to be that federal facilities have to be built, there is no available infrastructure to simply

This is like when the President says he doesn’t want to be known as the Drone President, and then drones more people.

What bothers me is that this woman is a professor...

Susan Gurney is clearly an ignorant self-hater. Women experience cognitive decline after 55, but magical men don’t? Makes sense, so let’s put a man who is 2 years older than the woman running) in office. And the thing about the way they speak? Whaaaat? She hears rationality, intelligence, and coherence when Trump
