So a couple of people have told me. Genuinely not the impression I;ve got over my lifetime, or from anyone I know erpsonally. Could be we’re wrong.

Yeah I used the wrong word. Should have been “negative” or something along those lines rather than “innocuous” there. Dunno what happened.
Yeah thank god you put a tldr professor...
I don’t think not using the term would shift people to view an innoccuous action as more palatable. People would still feel as they do about Valve going along with the cultural norm of sex-is-worse-than-violence. It’s not being obfuscated by a term change afaik.
Sorry, you’ve lost me. Softening the phrasing will make the action seem worse? I’m afraid I;m not following.
Tbh I can’t remember how the vlacking out is called. But you could be right.
“it is disingenuous to not call censorship censorship.”
Filtering products from their store is a ridulous usage of the term. It fits the technical definition, from my other discussion it seems it actually does, just about. So yeah, you;’re right there, I got that one wrong.
I left the rest out because I don’t think anyone in the example is an ‘official’. But looking up the term, does seem like it can be used for someone in a company, so you’re technically right there.
Right, so 1a and 1b there talk about the term being practice of censoring, and being a censor. They don;t really tell us anything about the actual actions that make this up, which is what we’re talking about.
I don’t disagree with much of your post!
Why is that how censorship is defined? It’s not the common usage. The technical definition mentions “someone who supervises conduct and morals” is the censor (all the rest of deals with official examples)...who is that here? The customer who sent the complaint? Doesn’t seem that ‘supervisory’ but maybe I’m wrong…
So you say common usage doesn’t make it correct, hmm. Depends how we define “correct” I suppose, but I’d say common usage is very important.
So how do we separate typical business practices from ‘censorship’? Private company receives feedback from a number of customers that they don’t think a product is suitable for the kids browsing their storefront (I’m presuming here). Company weighs their options and stops selling it, but does nothing to stop the…
Uh, so why post that link? If you’re going to try and stretch the common usage from governmental/offical interferance (y’know, the reason we have such a bad reaction to the term) to also include private pressure groups, it’s a bit weird to then say there’s no need for an actual group!
So where’s the private pressure group in this situation? They don’t seem to be mentioned. Just “a number of complaints that were sent to steam”.
Replying here because opening that page locks my browser up.
Right, well if you’re having this problem then please check your posts after you’ve posted gifs, and edit to remove them before the window closes if it’s happened. I’m sure we’d all appreciate it!
I don’t think OP wants his fellow commuters to know he’s using it.
The bubbles one should have won!
