If he’s objecting to you giving up (seems like?) then presumably he’s not totally given up himself? Bringing up the age thing might be him just trying to find excuses so he himself doesn’t have to make that decision to try again (kinda shitty though).

Oh yeah, I’ve heard really good things about al-anon. Never went to a meeting but I talked to a guy involved and it helped.

I think there are groups who meet up to do stuff, like help eachother make things and swap ideas. (This was years ago I heard about that though). You could search for one in your area.

Sounds like you’ve paid your dues and then some, and you’re doing the right thing. If you do somehow end up worrying more overall when you’re away (which I doubt, from talking to others in similar situations) then it was totally worth the shot.
