Damn right they were! That was what made a huge part of the movie to my ten year old self back then. The F-14 has long been retired. I don’t know of any other navy fighter jet that can recapture the sheer badassness (not a word, I know) of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. How do they plan on making this movie without the F-14?
