I remember reading this, in one of the volumes of Star Wars Tales series from Darkhorse comics. If they go this route in Rebels, I might just lose my mind. The ensuing sabre fight would be bonkers.

There is also a culture on the studio side that rarely gets heard. There are so many rich stories from salty industry vets, who…

In the golden age of kids afternoon cartoons, Animation was done by studios in house by animators with some level of training.
As the years went by, productions became more and more expensive, so studios began to out source the animation part of production.
To make up for lack of training and to keep productions running…

A lot of the backgrounds are also CG. It was explained in a Box Trolls featurette, that they do this now to combat giving the audience “a diorama feeling”.
There are lots of youtube videos about Laika’s process and just how much 3D printing as boosted it. They’re worth watching if you love animation.
