I believe the Nissan Leaf uses an induction motor, as did all Teslas until the Model 3 was introduced. (The Model 3 has permanent magnet motors, and IIRC, AWD Model S and X cars now use a permanent magnet motor in the front and an induction motor in the rear.)
DC motors have brushes. Brushes are a piece of metal rubbing on another piece of metal. That produces a ton of friction and eats into efficiency a lot. Brushed motors usually run at around 80% efficiency, while brushless motors are usually between 90 and 95%. There’s also the question of safety - if it’s fed full…
