Tilda Swinton wasn’t picked because she’s white, she was picked because she’s fucking freaky looking. She’s weird and angular and androgynous and looks vaguely inhuman. That’s why they cast her as a quasi-human “ancient one.”

Maybe we should stop kowtowing to the Chinese, especially in regards to their occupation of Tibet.
So they pandered to the close-minded Chinese market that doesn’t want to accept a thing which is a thing?
It’s really more pandering to their government censors than the consumers. This is something that’s just going to get worse, too.
I’m sure the Chinese government would want no mention of Tibet in there at all, is the real issue. Even having a Chinese actor play a Tibetan monk could cause all sorts of issues with getting the movie approved for that market.
I really am getting kind of tired at how the studios love pandering to the Chinese market now. From what I understand, most Chinese audiences don’t exactly care for it, either. Of course, I’m sure this has more to do with the government, and less the audience. sigh
As someone who participated in the outcry against the whitewashing of GitS, I can honestly say that Tilda Swinton’s casting didn’t bother me much at all. This is mostly just a personal thing, because I always get the impression that when Tilda Swinton plays a magical character, she’s playing a non-human, androgynous…
