I think bassracerx nailed it. The market was a hot mess for a couple of years, and a lot of people who would otherwise have replaced their cars decided to stick with what they had until prices came back down.

Not wanting a CVT limits their options in the hybrid market. I’d say they need to accept that their Outback was a lemon and not indicative of all CVTs, but I completely understand why they don’t want another one. 4 transmissions in 50,000 miles sounds like a nightmare to deal with regardless of has to pay for them. 

I can vouch for the Niro as a good choice. My parents recently bought the PHEV model, and they are very happy with it. Kia calls it a CUV, but it’s closer to being a station wagon. Plenty of space for a kid and two dogs.

Those wheels. I can’t get past those horrible wheels. I’m not spending $11k on a base model Mercedes that needs new wheels and to have the grill repainted or replaced. For a few thousand less I’d be on board with rescuing this car.
