For what it’s worth (little), the books did also have multiple extremely unsubtle hints that Nymeria was gathering her wolf army unto her, so this all clicks.

Free falling means you get to hit terminal velocity when the wind dragging force (which depends/increases with velocituy) equals the gravitational force (e.g. weight).
