its not just the manufacturers but also the carriers. American carriers are notorious for altering phone software before release, and this causes a delay with software updates. @Glen Hinckley: No way its only 8-16k ROM for a powertrain controller, with 2K RAM. Powertrain controllers are the most complicated ECUs in a car. I work on brake controllers and ours have 256k of RAM.

@protomech: Its possible they use ECC, but I somewhat doubt it. The powertrain controller definitely has some memory error protection, its a MISRA requirement, but I'm not sure if it's ECC.
