The RPMs will be same no matter the load....the speed of the truck however could be different especially with 2 open diffs and no traction.

Why was he trying to match RPM and not speed at the point of hitting the brakes? There is gearing in the transfer case, maybe he’s going slower at the moment of hitting the brakes in 4wd than 2wd.
