I seriously doubt that the math works that way. When I was on unemployment, making a certain amount of money would start to cut into it, but making less than $X was just an add-on to the unemployment check.

I grew up eating bean soup for lunch every Monday and Friday. If cooking one of those in a slow cooker/pressure cooker or normal pot is not cheaper and better per serving than even the cheapest processed food, I’d be very surprised.

That can be a factor for sure. I ended up in Denver, CO and I am sure there are more opportunities here than in BFE, Michigan. I can understand that as a factor as well then.
