Signing up for the free option does create a new account, so I assume all the stuff associated with my existing one is gone (at least in the Jezebel context). The commenting system is non-Kinja as well, so no stars or any way to react to comments other than replying. All my old Jez comments still appear in my Kinja

I have no idea why Jalopnik staff has never proofread what they post.

They were asking for $8 a month or $80 per year. I don’t doubt that it was about the money for a lot of people, but I think for many more it was about losing anonymity. I created a free account this morning, and even posted a comment to test it out. There are still very, very few comments on any of the posts; most

I was happy when Paste appeared to have “saved” Jezebel, but as you note, there was virtually no commenting going on. I too lost interest pretty quickly. Clearly, very few people wanted to have to pay for a subscription to comment. (Those that did all seemed to be weirdos.) Interesting to hear that commenting is now

To you? To clarify, I’m talking about the science of statistical sampling, not stating an opinion. It is a fact that 3500 is a huge sample size.

That sample size is huge. The only question is how representative it was.

The study only looked at about 3,500 Tesla owners, so it’s possible the sample size was too small to be accurate, but 3,500 individuals should be large enough to be statistically significant.

For anything other than a short (i.e., one where I can get away with just the suit I’m wearing) business trip, I have no problem with checking a bag. I’ve never had bags lost, and I’ve never waited very long to check or pick up my bags. The modern overhead-bin drama created by all the “I will die before I check a bag”

Exactly. You’re not buying food for more than 2 people, so why the big American fridge? The central location also means you can shop like a European - buying small amounts of food more often rather than driving to Costco and hauling home tons that you now need to store.

Thank you! Came here to say this; you saved me the trouble.

This is much simpler in Canada, because “A number plate is the property of the Crown.” So freedom of speech isn’t an issue - you don’t have any right to express yourself on someone else’s stuff.

what is different about this person stepping in front of the vehicle vs. any other?

It was really just a joke. (But the point was that the switch to plant-based insulation on automotive wiring led to a widespread problem when rodents discovered that it was delicious - unlike the traditional, less environmentally-friendly insulations.)

Oh, god. Now I’ll have to worry about the squirrels eating my seats and not just my wiring.

I feel you. Years ago I was coming to the end of a long, high-speed highway trip when I heard a soft slap-slap-slap from under the hood as I pulled into my driveway. Shut the car off immediately and found the timing belt (in my Eagle Talon’s interference engine) was holding together by about one strand of fibre and

Almost been there, almost done that. But in my case it was actually: Hitchhiker. Axe. Back seat.

Yeah, there’s all kinds of people here bloviating about how the study is flawed, proving only that they don’t know what they are talking about. Anyone reading the full article (the one in the journal, not the news piece) will see that it’s perfectly sound methodologically, and doesn’t make any claims that aren’t

I’m a bit surprised this passed peer review; but then I do see a lot of garbage that gets published these days.

She was already shooting video when the thing went past. (Or, more accurately, when the thing was floating there and the plane went past.)

This needs more stars.
