Just like how anyone “who knows the ins and outs of the wages definitely knows why” promising newcomer Delpy was paid far less than established movie star Ethan Hawke.

Now playing

[“...he’s also credited with largely inventing the idea of a drum solo.”]

Man, I’m like 1/8th into that one, and it’s fascinating. The blurb from Michael Douglas is especially potent -

Not sure of your point here. I get why Delpy was paid less than Hawke - he was a recognizable, bankable star in the US, and she wasn’t. Same reason RDJ got far less than Terrence Howard for Iron Man. Terrence’s career was blowing up in the few years previous to its release. Crash, Hustle & Flow, Ray, Oscar

He literally said I assume it made financial sense at the time when you looked at their careers in that moment.”

Also, they had to agree to Terrence Howard’s demands that there be no gravity on set.

But... that’s precisely the point. You get paid according to your career, not how good an actor you are or how big is your role.

I mean, not knowing any of the behind-the-scenes stuff, it seems hard to argue with what he’s saying. At the time, Delpy had made Europa Europa and White – both brilliant films, but very few people in America would’ve had any idea who she was. Whereas Hawke had just starred in Reality Bites, Alive, White Fang, Dead

Then you change cells.

Word on the street is that she’s working on a machine that can mount an effective legal defense without requiring a lawyer. She’s going to disrupt the whole industry! First they dismiss you, then they laugh at you, then you change the world!

Thanks so much for that last image, really, I needed that in my head.

Yeah, the Claire Foy thing is frankly silly. She may have been the main character, but good heavens, Matt Smith was miles more famous.

I feel like this would actually be a story if she’d gotten paid less for her work on Before Midnight. Like, maybe instead of the headline decrying she got paid less for a movie made in 1995 when she was a considerably less bankable star than Ethan Hawke, the headline should have acknowledged how badass it was that she

Hawke’s lifetime box office total: $839,786,290. Delpy’s lifetime box office total: $80,505,921

Yep but wait until you find out who the brother is...

I think the RDM involvement is the only thing interesting me in this show. I’ve learned much more about the show from this article than from any marketing Apple has done, which isn’t a great sign.

I think the very last shot with DeNiro looking in the rear view mirror kinda undermines that. The character hasn’t won and hasn’t gotten better, he’s still the same scary nutcase he was all through the movie.

It’s remarkable how enjoyable Goodfellas is given the fact that pretty much every character in the movie is a horrible person, most especially the protagonist. The movie starts with him describing in detail how all he wants to do is enjoy the above the law lifestyle of a mafia associate. Throughout the movie he does

I’ll also add OP states “But nobody is criticizing Scorcese.” which is even bigger horseshit. Go dig up reviews of say Taxi Driver... a LOT of people decried the violence and grime of that film.
