It depends on the person. Some use they/them, some use gender-neutral pronouns like zie/zir or ou, some just go by their names. Some are okay going by the pronouns assigned to them at birth. The idea behind it, and behind this article, is that if people tell you what pronouns are preferred, you respect that. Nobody…

Absolutely, no one is expected to be psychic. But the point here is that these people DID make it clear what pronouns they used, and those are being ignored by journalists.

In this case, the issue is in the language used in the article discussing the murder and tragedy. Gender does matter, in that case, because it influences what pronoun is used in the description of the tragedy.

Asexuality refers to someone who does not experience sexual attraction. They may experience romantic or aesthetic attraction, but not sexual. So that has nothing to do with “a role someone plays.”
