Kelly, I’ve had a long day, and my brain is mush, but I wanted to thank you for your pieces on romance novels. They’re very well written, and give respect to a genre by women for women.

I know. My mother read me Jaws as a bedtime story, but I think she only read the violent parts. Same with taking me to see The Shining (and leaving the book around) and she and my grandmother only clapped their hands over my eyes when the naked dead woman rose from the tub.
“It hit Netflix like 2 weeks ago, pal.”
That’s like with Shutter Island — I had people say someone told them the twist so the movie was spoiled. I watched the movie, having read the book, and got more out of it because I could see the subtlest of hints involving character reactions.
Yeah, he sorta was. :)
Oh, sure, I can see Mama!
This discussion is full of people who root for the shark. It’s common. No word on it these people all have blood coming from their wherevers.
I was 7 when I saw Jaws in the movie theater, which makes me old now. So, there’s that. I would rank it somewhere near the top of the best movies. Shawshank would be on the list too, of course. I’m not a monster!
You get bit in half and have your torso bobbing up and down in the water like an, um, bobber — and tell me if you don’t feel pretty damned horrible. :)
Yep, this is similar to what I just wrote. Remember the shot at the end where Regan sees the priest’s collar and kisses him in gratitude? Now the guy with the collar is the scariest thing around.
Catholicism, in the case of The Exorcist. It helps to be raised Catholic, and buy into — even unwillingly buy into — the premise. I’m scared by things I believe are possible, but because of childhood indoctrination, that includes the devil possessing someone, and needing a priest to solve the issue. :)
Oops, Mathieu
If their intent was not to offend, the school and their parents really ought to be ashamed since they’d been failed by them if they truly did not realize how gross and cruel this was.

I think there is a tendency, a temptation, to sympathize (even empathize) with Spicer, and cast him in the role as some guy who went to work every day and was at the whim of an asshole boss with unreasonable demands.
At one point, Koontz was pretty willing to kill his characters. I’ve appreciated a lot of his work, but I don’t think he has King’s talent. To his credit, I think because he doesn’t have that talent he works harder, and nitpicks every sentence — from something I read a while ago.
I imagine publishers were eager to find the next Stephen King, and then slowly but surely realized he is a once in a lifetime money-printing machine. Although I’m a fan of King’s son, Joe Hill, and bet he will do very well for himself.
