I read The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski and I enjoyed it enough that I immediately started Sword of Destiny. The world of The Witcher can be pretty damn pessimistic, but I'll be damned if it doesn't add to the world's mood perfectly and allow for perfectly sharp dry-humor.
