For desktop PC uses, I agree that you don't need a codec pack. VLC will pretty much play any video you throw at it. If it can't, try Windows Media Player and/or (if you have iTunes installed) Quicktime. If none of those work, don't bother.

The £8 UK one is definitely overpriced but, given the mediocre quality of these, you might as well just suck it up and buy the official one. At least it'll actually work!
