If “cancel culture” were real and worked we’d have no shitty people in media/politics/etc.

I finally read the original trilogy in my mid-twenties, after a decade or so of false starts. (I did the same thing with Dune!) On the one hand, I found Asimov’s style to be totally colorless and his characters mostly one-dimensional. On the other hand, it was fun to recognize all the stuff that inspired or informed

I remember them being pretty... dry (and I say that as a person who usually likes dry stuff). The saltines of science fiction.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the split happened pre Nixon..... you know when one side supported a complete crook that was willing to do anything and everything to get re-elected even if it breaks the law. Sound familiar? Of course at least Nixon was ashamed when he got caught and at least he was competent at the

(although unlike in the horror film Midsommer, nobody’s going to be sacrificed by a pagan cult)  well, they wouldn’t tell you about that, would they.

If you’ve never tried it, Rishi Tea makes, hands down, the best Earl Grey.

Mrs. Copperpot drinks Stash’s DOUBLE Bergamot blend, which I can only imagine would make James break out into hives and projectile vomiting. I admit it’s too strong for me, so I stick to the regular Twinings EG now that I’m down to one can of Coke per day. I also admit that I probably wouldn’t have tried Earl Grey in

Stash is good. I prefer Numi.

“Why did you name the main directory ‘Daddy’?”

That scene is probably Cavill’s best acting of his career so far.

This is a random nit-pick that is not the point of the article, but aren’t frozen vegetables actually perfectly fine and nutritious to eat?

I have never heard of this but I already hate it.

“These views and actions do not represent ABC News’s values. We just hired her, supported her, and protected her from the numerous complaints.”

Barbara Fedida, who was placed on administrative leave, has reportedly been at the center of more than a dozen HR complaints in the past few years.

I’ve heard similar jokes about the Jetsons and Flintstones.

John Leguizamo made a similar joke about the original Star Trek. According to him, the fact that there were no latino people aboard the Enterprise meant “They weren’t planning on having us around in the future.”

Agreed that there needs to be permanent context that accompanies GWTW, as with any popular work of art/literature/entertainment that hasn’t aged up with the times. I’d also add the tiresome old “the book is better” because it absolutely contextualizes—for better and for worse—where the film glosses over or glamorizes.

See: Connie Willis’s amazing short story Jack, about an unusual man who wants to “do his bit” during the Blitz.

12-year-old me definitely thought it sounded hokey.
