Maybe it wasn’t the smoothest diesel conversion, but I’m sure a well-executed merger with a quality diesel engine (maybe stuff a Cummins 3.9L four-pot under there...) and a dedicated transmission would sweeten the deal considerably.

Someone does not know their history. The Datsun 1500 was released before the MGB, and no where close to a copy. MGB is unibody, Datsun is body on frame, etc. Educate yourself before you look dumb.
That’s what I assumed. However both cars came out the same time. Actually the 1500 came out before. They’re two rather different cars though.
