If they can stretch the Miata platform, that would be a good way to make some more money off an expensive (nearly) standalone. I think basically a Miata coupe with different styling stretched for more interior space (though, still a 2-seater) and maybe a little wider could make for a good RX-7.

Different engines have different efficiency curves.
As explained in the article, they actually have no intention to sell the car. They want people to talk about and come in their dealership. Job done.
If they can build CUVs which are as efficient as the previous generation of sedans, that means they should be able to build sedans which are substantially more efficient than the current CUVs. Just a thought.
