I am rereading the review and it pretty much sounds like the author cannot stand that mix of exploitation, pulp and “preachy”. Preachy. PREACHY. I mean, these things are happening right now. The Purge is classic scifi in the sense that it is only a slight exageration of what is happening right now. If you think it is

Aldis Hodge! He should have been a big star, like, ten years ago already. So glad he’s getting work and the big screen time he deserves.

Wow. Bozeman was incredible, but.....I kinda hate you a little now for putting that idea in my head😎😘

I don’t know, Paranormal Activity got pretty creative, especially with the whole “VHS camera on an oscillating fan” bit. It only started falling apart when they tried to create a whole mythology around it instead of just “creepy shit happening on home security cameras”.

I never knew Union soldiers literally chased down and captured slave owners.

This would be Massa trying to escape.

That part I wouldn’t mind. But I got the impression it was more the plantation owner lamenting being robbed of his property and that mess, I’m not here for.

Now playing

The whole thing sounded like a LARP Boondock’s skit:

Come on over to K-whacky (Kentucky) to see the tax-payer-funded ark museum set up by crazy person ex-Gov Matt Bevins.

STOP LARPING SLAVERY.

So the poor slaveowner being chased like a dog, stories about how good massa really was and Confederate soldiers wistfully recalling how great those times were.

They can re-enact it next to that giant ark thing somewhere down there.

Christ. You’re probably right.

this is the only right response to such tomfoolery.

Knowing their racist asses, it would have been a Coyote-Road Runner setup.

I’m sure some wealthy, Confederate-loving, Trump-worshiping White people will be more than happy to support a plantation, as they love that sort of thing so much. It reminds them of the ‘good ol days’. Ian Campbell can keep going his coon dance for them.

How did racism help you, it didn't, you lost your money, bitch, racism doesn't win when you are that dumb.

I think something like this could be interesting if they lean into that Williams Street/Hanna-Barbera aesthetic and can find some way to update or bring some nuance to it. I think Kaling’s comedy works best when it’s digging into the absurdities that come about in that space between professional and personal

Like, ZOINKS!!
