Much as I love my superhero movies and the shenanigans of Benoit Blanc, I’d much rather see awards go to ‘Everything, Everywhere All At Once’ or ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, which I saw a couple of weeks back and can’t get out of my head. These are truly special films that had me gripped with a fraction of the budget,

Yeah, ‘RotK’ was the one I thought of. Not only a sequel and a blockbuster, but a *fantasy* film winning Oscars? Monocles were dropped.

I mean, Fury Road’s wins were all in the technical aspects. Editing, sound, costume, etc...

But you are off on that as well, considering that Return of the King won EVERY Oscar it was nominated for.

it’s sad that the old A.V. Club might have been on here going to bat for, I dunno, indie darling writer-director Sarah Polley.

Yeah, those poor mega-successful commercial franchises. It’s nice to see they’re finally getting some attention.

Glass Onion is the wildcard in the bunch. Moviegoers seem split between those who think it’s great and an improvement over the original and others who consider it a bloated bore.

They already did and it was called Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mel’s stuff for the last...oh god 20+ years? has been pretty lame but I’ll give this a watch anyhow.

I mean, he has to make it to at least 2,000 years old

Counter point.  A lot of funny people are involved and Brooks has always been a great collaborator. This could turn out to be fun

‘Girls’ was invented as a Charles Manson Helter Skelter style event to precipitate a race-war by forcing maximum whiteness onto people and make them revolt. Unfortunately, they made it at a time before media got more diverse, and the white-dominated world just slurped it up.

No it's not just as harmful as domestic abuse and coercive control (which doesn't have to involve physical violence anyway).

Its quite simple how it’s exponentially worse. One is cheating the other is domestic abuse. The former is shitty and I wouldn’t want to be friends with the someone who does that. The latter is a serious and dangerous crime and the person doing it should be in jail.

Douglas’ character was shitty. Close’s character was a domestic abuser. The latter is exponentially worse than the former. We definitely don’t need a grey area to put them both in no.

Sorry?

Fair enough then but I’m not sure how:

Being a smug asshole is absolutely nothing compared to being a domestic abuser and stalker. Suggesting he’s somehow at fault for her abuse is grim apologia for domestic violence and coercive control.

Did we though?

I know he’s a jerk in the way he handles the situation (and that he’s cheating on his wife to begin with), but from what I remember, she knew that he was married, and knew it was just a one time thing from the beginning, it’s not like he lied to her about being married.

The thing is there’s no grey morality to the story the second Alex starts emotionally blackmailing Dan by cutting her wrists. Extreme coercive control behavior. Though perhaps audiences weren’t familiar enough with the tropes of domestic abuse in 87 to realise what Alex was doing so they needed to add in the bunny
