This is exactly why I refuse to work with indie/small studios, stuff like that happens or they can be super susceptible to money issues. When they are small like that, playing fast and loose with the law is often missed.

Am I the only one who has to google someone whenever they say, “______ Youtuber X”? Is this what getting old feels like? I mean I’m only 30, but it’s stuff like this and encountering people who’ve never watched Wayne’s World that makes me wonder.

How did that sell the game? That is so much worse looking than the actual game! I guess part of why I like the look of the game is the fact that it has become iconic over time, but still that is ugly.

Take it from someone who knows all about the dirty underside of the game business: stay out of it or do it for love with no expectations and make damn sure you have ironclad contract with any collaborators.

all I have to say is whenever I see someone be oddly specific to a lawyer like level, it always makes me feel suspicious. “those claims are false” sounds like a normal person “those claims are factually incorrect” seems awfully specific....

Except this is pretty much what I don’t want. Maybe 10 seconds of that was actual gameplay, and never more than about 2 seconds at a time. It does nothing to give you a feel for what the game is actually like.

Well I guess No Man’s Sky will have to be taken down or significantly changed then because they’re still using all of the “preview” media of stuff that never made it into the game instead of actual screenshots.

Exactly. Sometimes gameplay trailers can even make me more hyped.

While we’re at it, how about requiring at least one of the video trailers to have actual gameplay.

I don’t see any hastily-written Cyrillic swears or screaming Brazilian children pinging my hero every femtosecond in those Dota screenshots, pretty sure that’s still false advertising.

I remember being taught in kindergarten to do it like this. I also remember though that you were supposed to wash your hands almost as frequently as you might cough.
