In a perfect world all cars would have a common battery, and we could create a quick-change station where you just drop your discharged battery and hook up a charged one in the same time it takes to fill up a gas tank.

Yeah, they’re here, but not like they are in warmer climes. For the most part, they’re not a problem here. In say, Georgia, they’re in every single house, building, garage, shed, under every log, rock, etc. unless you actively wage war against them.
