Taxis can make their top light blink to alert cops without the passenger/carjacker/whoever knowing. They have a local dispatcher they keep in contact with. They work shifts to clock who’s going and who came back. All that would require Uber to feel some responsibility for their drivers - but, hey, its not like they’re

It does sound like deflecting, but I mean he isn’t really that wrong tho. Especially in the cases where passengers attacked drivers.

Whether or not they use the same database is irrelevant. How they choose to use the information gathered is what is relevant.

Well it’s a society thing, too. But that doesn’t mean that elevated numbers in Ubers aren’t primarily an uber thing. If people are being sexually assaulted in the work place, we don’t accept a response that says “well, that’s the horrible society we live in”, we require people to accept responsibility for having an

The Ford dealer just a mile away from the development center basically stopped selling Focuses around late 2016. They had the ST models (yay manuals), but basically none of the automatics on the lot. The dealer I was talking with said it’s because they sell to people who have family who work for Ford and everyone was

Not Walmart stats but the USA in general.

From the linked NYT’s article, it is US.

That is a good anecdote.

9 in 2018, 19 in both years studied combine. I apologize for the confusion. The headline has been corrected.

One of the people who works for me was under indictment for felony domestic violence and kidnapping when he decided it would be a good idea to pick up a side gig to cover his lawyer bills. Lyft declined him as a driver in 10 minutes because things like that show up in an actual background check and SHOULD disqualify

I first used Uber in NYC after my cousin showed me its many wonders. It was some time before it finally made it’s way to my former town of Baltimore. I was super excited except for one hitch... The new service had a problem with it’s totally unprotected drivers being robbed and carjacked. A couple of high-profile

For real. Like if it is only 9, who gives a shit. But 19? I’m deleting the app. No way I’m getting 86'd by some rando gig driver. I’ll just take the metro.

The attacks represent 0.0002 percent of the 1.3 billion rides the app facilitated last year.

I’d like to know how those numbers compare with simply going outside on a daily basis. I’d wager a guess that you’re still far safer calling for an Uber after dark than walking home alone.

I love the argument from their legal counsel. Its essentially:

Throw public transit in too

I’d really like to know who those numbers compare (on a per ride basis) with taxis, livery cars, and lyft. They sound appalling, but without knowing the competition you can’t really tell if that’s just the product of providing a ton of rides.

He’s already done time in Virginia.  He really doesn’t need to add “Japanese Prison” to his resume.
