Tom Hanks is America’s Dad, and all that jazz, but can we just talk about the adds that continue to make this site/other G/O sites almost unreadable? Do you (the person in charge of implementing adds) or Target (to use an example) think that by pissing off the readers, that maybe we’ll all get irritated enough to want

oh man, you nailed it. I just made a shorter reply referencing O’Neal specifically, but you hit on another important thing I missed: as a pop culture nerd I appreciated that writers felt knowledgeable about things they were criticizing/appreciating/anticipating/snarking on. I used to feel like the writers here knew

The commentariat isn’t defensive or insulted at modern snark, we’re insulting how badly written the modern snark is.

I will go on record and say that Tatiana is definitely the worst of them all. If I see her byline I won’t click it, and usually the same with Ol’ Sammy here but this one snuck through.

The Barsanti Special.

That was Tatiana Tenreyro, I believe. We have to keep a separate tally for this shit, because it’s not like anyone can beat Andrew Paul.

I can excuse Hughes because his video game coverage is just solid. I often don’t agree with his opinions, but I genuinely respect that he spotlights a lot of cool games here at the AV Club and that he doesn’t let a nitpick get in the way of just having fun. It’s honestly a lot better than what current Kotaku does,

AV Club has always had kind of a too cool for school hipster mentality, but I think that as they’ve aged, it’s soured and become a bit noxious. As you say, disdainful. Like a high school kid bent on edginess, everything has to be held at arm’s length now, lest you be seen liking something. I really miss Emily VanDerWer

This is nowhere near as bad as William Hughes’ “haha isn’t it funny and also umfathomable that people can like things I don’t” schtick, which carries Sean O’Neal’s grouchy torch. But it is bad. I agree with your 4 SB rating.

Mostly his readers.

Shows what you know. This author holds only disdain for everything.

“Disdain for the material” is AV Club’s house style.

This is peak Barsanti, shut the website down, it can’t get any worse.

Ahh, a non-news story that admits as much and also sounds like it was written by someone who holds only disdain for the material referenced. Gotcha.

Hey, look, sometimes...[trails off while trying to think of an excuse for missing the irony in what I wrote but will simply have to live with it]

I think that sentence is poorly constructed too. I think it should be “IMDB, which underwent a disastrous redesign roughly a decade ago and rendered the site impossible to navigate, is no longer just a database for the entertainment industry”

Look, if there’s anyone who is qualified to pass judgements on other sites’ design, it’s a writer for the AV Club.

I feel like we already knew this story. Instead of dredging this up to remind everyone of who the assholes are, maybe spend some site space on indie films or TV series you don’t already supply four stories a week to?

I think it’s safe to say the majority of these articles are written on smartphones.

There are moments when I think Hughes and Barsanti don’t know what they’re talking about and don’t bother to give the slightest of efforts in learning any of it but write about it anyway. (it’s every time they post)
