I never watched it, but I remember hearing about a story on the This American Life TV Show that suggested this is a common behavior. Put a camera in a person's hand, and they film stuff because they quickly grasp that it is important that they get the story … and that the camera acts as a psychological barrier to them…

The time lapse with them spinning records looks fun, but not so amazingly fun that I'd risk losing everything (job, friends, family, arm) to be able to participate in. Not even close to that amount of fun.
