I had a Mazda 626 that had a separate button to turn on the AC and didn’t turn it on automatically if you switched the output to the dash vents. IIRC all the other cars I’ve owned did automatically turn on the AC when you switched to defrost.

Actually, I probably need new glasses. I went back and looked at the images. If I zoom in, you can see the chevrons. In the original size that I looked at, it appeared that they didn’t have chevrons.
