I agree with you. I wish there were more people like him in congress. I don’t see him as an effective executive. Some of the responses he gives when he’s pressed on how he’ll actually accomplish what he’s proposing are kind of trump-ian (Q: What will you do about ISIS? A: We need to get neighboring states to step up!

We’re both right, we’re just referring to different parts of the chart. I was only referring to the Oscar wins/nominations going back to 2000. You’re right about the film role sample.

I think that’s the SAG membership that goes back to 2007. The Oscar noms and wins are from 2000 to now. They note that there’s a bigger gap for black directors, especially black women directors.

Yeah, that’s an interesting point. But oddly seems true for black actors as well. The last black actor to be nominated for a leading role was Chiwetel Ejiofor (Barkhad Abdi was also nominated that year, but for a supporting role), and David Oyelowo (who by all accounts deserved a nomination last year) was cast to play

Just want to note that I agree with you completely that black actors aren’t being represented at the expense of asian or latino actors, and I don’t think they need to give anything up. It’s white actors that are overrepresented.

You might be right that the US population isn’t the right metric to use, but since there is still a Foreign language film category, the global population probably isn’t either. It’s definitely catering to American tastes, which is why I think the backlash it encouraging — it demonstrates Americans are no longer

Maybe slightly tangential, and I posted this in an earlier article, but was late to the game and it got buried. Economist did an interesting analysis of U.S. demographics, SAG membership, actual roles in film, Oscar nominations, and Oscar wins. Predictably, white people are vastly overrepresented at all levels of the

I should probably be mad, but between this and Risen I’m just glad Joseph Fiennes has work again bless his heart.

Yes. This. The Economist recently crunched some numbers and found that relative to demographics in the US, black actors are slightly underrepresented in lead roles on whole, and actually mariginally over-represented in Oscar wins (white people are massively over-represented in all categories, but mostly at the expense

I’m not a Bear expert, but I don’t doubt the fight was realistic. In some ways it’s definitely really, really good, and I think in the end that compensates for the CGI, but to my eye the CGI wasn’t any better when it was moving.

Alot about the scene is good. I’m totally buying that it’s how a bear attack would unfold. But yeah, I wasn’t super impressed with the look of the Bear.

I also don’t think anyone would complain if Samuel L. Jackson got a nod for Hateful Eight, rather than Cranston or Redmayne. I like those guys but, eh.

Agree with you on Hateful Eight. That movie was seriously good. It seems to be doing okay at the box office (relative to its budget), but I’m really not surprised it didn’t catch on. It’s a much more difficult, and I thought in many ways, much angrier than the Revenant. For as stunning as the Revenant was, and as

I KNOW. My boyfriend and I walked out of Spotlight like, holy shit, Liev Schrieber just owned that movie.

I’d agree that it isn’t his best performance, but since there aren’t any other standouts in the best actor field, it seems like a good year to finally recognize him. Like, I doubt anyone is gonna be like, “Matt Damon was robbed!”

I’m sad Liev Scrieber didn’t get a Supporting Actor nomination.

Hm. I wouldn’t have thought that but the complexion, mouth, and scarf are similar...

This seems like a good place to leave this photo of young Ricky Gervais:

Yeah. I mean, I could justify some of that to myself because I don’t think they were really supposed to be in love with each other so much as with the idea of each other. Carol’s going through a divorce and looking for something new, Therese is just beginning to understand that she actually could be with a woman and

I still need to see it! You’ve convinced me.
