I can’t speak to Entourage since I haven’t seen it, so I’ll use Nebraska. That movie was essentially about a guy on a roadtrip with his dad, but the stakes felt higher because Payne sold the conflict. Guardians didn’t develop the world enough to make it feel like the stakes were as high as they said they were, so I

You got me there — they developed the characters much better than the story.

A galaxy the author hasn’t given me a compelling reason to care about deserves to be destroyed.

I think that makes my point more than anything. They couldn’t develop the stakes in a meaningful way so they just went “BOOM THE WHOLE GALAXY NOW IT’S IMPORTANT.” They didn’t do much work to make the audience care about it.

I didn’t hate it, but it was coasting on Chris Pratt and Cooper/Racoon’s charm the whole time. And they are charming, but the world building left a lot to be desired and the story had no stakes. I do think this is one where the sequel will be better.

Though, to me, that is skewering rape culture....

I did not get, “women want to be raped” from that. More, “this one women had a fantasy that was untenable because it would basically require men to rape women on the offchance that they’re into that” the subtext being that is badong.

I, for one, am amused that this thread has become about pitting Louie and Maron’s personality defects against each other.

FALSE

Asking twice is okay if you’re perceptive enough to read cues that suggest it would be welcome (and then do it in a respectful way) and are not simply badgering because you feel like the world owes you a date with this person. Sounds like this guy fits into the latter category with a vengeance though...

Also, everyone seems to have forgotten that Linda Hunt (white woman) won an Oscar for portraying an asian man in the year of living dangerously:

I think that phrase would have been very helpful to the students at my undergrad institution who went on a hunger strike to protest our western-centric core curriculum. Was their concern valid? Yes. Did the hunger strike make them look like damn fools? Absolutely.

I tend to agree. I don’t think it should be mandatory or expected, and would certainly be a weird conversation to have early on or if you’re just dating casually; but if your concern about sharing something like that with a partner is that they’re going to judge you, then maybe that’s a sign that your partner isn’t a

You win.

According to wikipedia, Tom uses female pronouns to refer to Conchita, the drag queen he portrays, but male pronouns to refer to himself.

Rihanna is the queen and as such uses the majestic plural, duh.

I liked the monologue. He’s done far more ‘offensive’ jokes before and I appreciate that he took the risk in a forum where he probably knew there’d be some blowback.

So if I watched the first 4 episodes and hated it does it get better? I fucking love Ben Mendelsohn, but the family just ... has no family chemistry. Even dysfunctional/estranged families have a kind of chemistry and it’s ... just ... not ... there. And I feel like the people making it got this, which is why we have
