The answer is yes, you are a racist.
The answer is yes, you are a racist.
I don't think what his family faced in the past has any direct correlation to what he may have privately felt about a football team's nickname. I certainly don't think he "made up" anything about genocide — that makes no sense. I think he probably just privately felt that the Redskins name was trivial in comparison to…
Yeah, I see you're point, now that I re-read it. Man, Reilly really has to be desperate for attention these days to twist is father-in-law's words in print like that ...
Well, here's the complete passage from Reilly's column:
Well, I'm just basing this opinion on the assumption that — whatever Reilly's shortcomings or flaws over the years — there's no way he'd intentionally quote his own father-in-law as stating the EXACT OPPOSITE of his real opinion on this issue; he had to know what Burns really felt about this. No matter how much of a…
It sounds to me like Burns expressed one opinion to Reilly in a private conversation (which he didn't expect to be quoted in print), and then backpedaled furiously on that opinion once this column was published and the shit hit the fan.
According to the police (as quoted in several new stories on this) the bikers didn't just swarm around Lein's car "to see what happened" at the start of his whole episode — they actually started beating on his car and slashed one of his tires. And if you watch the video closely, just before Lein takes off in a panic,…
In checked the Facebook comments under that original, outrageous clip of the woman ripping the ball out of the little girl's hands (linked above, and also here) to see if there was anyone out there who would actually defend her for it. And sure enough, I found this:
Well that's great. Thank you! I'm glad to finally hear a Native American weigh in on this topic. It's the first time that's ever happened in many comment threads on this topic I've participated in.
According to various reports, anywhere between "nine" and "two dozen" people showed up for that protest. Are their only that many people in the Oneida nation? If not, it sound like most members of the Oneida nation don't feel very strongly about this.
Wrong. African American find that term very offensive (despite the fact that some of them may use it affectionately among themselves). So that example has nothing to do with my point.
"it's acceptability is not set by whether the group it refers to asks for it to be changed"
So somebody please conduct a better poll!! Why is that so hard?
Did Native American people go up to Mike Wise, unsolicited? If so, that's a great example to provide. I'd look forward to seeing it.
No, there are actually two public opinion polls that have been conducted on this. Both showed that the vast majority (over 90%) of people who self-identified* as "native american" had no problem with the Redskins name.
What a dumb example. No team would call itself that, because all black people find that offensive.
The last couple sentences of Reilly's piece are stupid, and you've zeroed in on the stupid part. But actually, the rest of his column is quite good.
It's because all the hype has raised your expectations too much. I find that can never enjoy anything when it's been hyped too much — it always seems less good than it probably really is.
Hey Drew, you know what you should do next? Watch only the second-to-last episode of every season. Then you'll get all the high points of the entire series including (SPOILER ALERT) Gus Fring getting half his face blown off.*
The percentages shown in your pie chart on the right side are roughly consistent with 2012 data — see my other comment.
