I think they have to notify the state that they carried out the layoffs, but not in advance of doing so.

On you first point, I agree.

Everyone who has responded to my comment appears to have misunderstood my meaning, so I must not have made myself clear. I did NOT mean that people can't "read the tea leaves," suspect, predict or otherwise infer that layoffs may coming if they pay attention to company performance indicators, statements, etc. What I

Regarding the "without warning, totally out of the blue" thing:

I had to stop reading after the third reference to "Dr. Wu," because I couldn't get the Steely Dan music out of my head.

Uh oh. Looks like "Strikethroughsy" — the mysterious street artist who attacks blog posts and converts them entirely to strikethrough text — has struck again!

What the hell is "Take That"?

I love you Drew, but you are 100% wrong on this "Redskins gave away three picks" thing. They gave away only two picks, and traded the third.

Hey, sorry if that comments sounds like I'm trying to be snotty or critical here — I'm not. I was really just curious as to whether Tim had seen the movie, and what he thought about it.

So Tim, did you actually see "A Thousand Words"? It sounds like maybe you didn't.

Right. Because it's more fun to make fun of the ones that should have been/known better.

We bred dogs to be dependent on us a couple thousand years ago. No use closing the barn door after the cow spilled the milk (before Christ died). Or ... something like that.

Also, it occurs to me I was being a bit insensitive in how I discussed this. I'm sorry about what happened to your friend - it sounds awful.

OK, now I understand — the friend already had a cat at home, and took the dog home to live in the same house as the cat. Sorry ... now I get it.

Actually, most of these so-called "no kill" shelters don't really take the position that they will never euthenize an animal. They will do so if the animal is ill or suffering. So referring to these shelters as places "that won't do so under any circumstances" is inaccurate.

I'm reacting to your whole point that no-kill shelters are bad because they aren't very nice places for animals to live. I'd agree that they aren't, but most of the animals in these places have nowhere else to go, and are often "problem cases" as pets, so the only alternative for the would probably be death. And the

I was responding to your statement that "Having pets really isn't very ethical." Billions of dogs and cats exist all over the world, so if they aren't kept as pets, what's going to happen to most of them? It seems the only alternatives for most of them would be to turn them loose or kill them.

Why did you bring your friend's cat to to "play" with a shelter dog you'd just adopted? Please know that cats and dogs aren't natural "playmates." When they live together in the same home, cats and dogs usually learn to tolerate each other, or even become affectionate. But cats and dogs who don't know each other are

Are you basing this opinion about no-kill shelters on any facts, or just your own impressions? What is the factual basis for your statement that "very few of them will ever be adopted"?

With an attitude like that, I don't understand why you own dogs. Please don't adopt any more.
