I doubt they could DDoS the servers any worse than the actual users on the first Saturday that the game is available in Europe.

I think the developers actually have acknowledged the outtage, I get a picture with a message that says

“Our servers are humbled by your incredible response.

We are working to resolve the issue. Please try again soon!”

See, when they announced the three teams in the beta, I imagined some species only spawning depending on your Team choice (e.g. Pokémon Blue/Red/Yellow game rosters). Then there’d still be competition between teams, but also cooperation by design.
