As a gay woman, yes it matters. We need to be able to see that we're not some weird modern mutant, but a natural part of history. Heterosexuals can open a history book and see straight idols (and bad guys,) and I feel like we LGBTs deserve that too.

I think it matters because it helps to normalize homosexuality. There are wonderful, successful, celebrated historical figures that some might be surprised to learn were homosexual, and it might persuade them that it's okay.
