Cool shit. Way to parent.
Cool shit. Way to parent.
Fact, I was so much better at games when I was a little kid through high school. I was born in 1986 and grew up with the NES, SNES, Gameboy, etc... So much more precision was needed in those older games, alas, I've become spoiled like the majority of gamers these days. Younger me would whoop older me's ass at ANY game…
For everyone who says this guy shouldn't be experimenting with/on his kid.
This is indeed a very Western, particularly American mind set. Anything that looks like appreciation for old things, or for quality, is deemed "pretentious," or its new variation, "hipster." There have been quite a few books written about this tendency in American culture, and to see it play out in such a weird way…
It's a problem if it's a generally negative experience. The kid got to play video games, which are always fun. I doubt his kid will grow up to hate him for showing him some classics.
This seems like an awesome idea. The kid will have far more understanding of the medium of most people even ten or fifteen years his senior. There is so much out there distracting from great game design these days that it has to be hard to even recognize design if you only have modern games to compare. (Not saying old…
I don't find it strange at all, plenty of parents force their children to ONLY watch Disney movies. Difference is this video game form actually teaches something.
The only pretentious thing here is your comment. Also the only negative thing. Nice work.
I love this story.
I find it interesting that people are complaining that he did this.
I rather doubt he had to be made to play.
Some parents refuse to let their kids play video games at all. Let that sink in and then consider whether or not this was unfair. The boy merely had to upgrade gaming generation by generation. Probably getting a richer experience than any of us did growing up through 2 or 3 generations.
"but it doesn't seem like one can do this experiment without being forcible about it."
You and me both.
So the complete opposite of this:
It sounds worse when you say he used his son as an experiment. I don't see this as any different from parents that show kids older movies that they grew up with before watching the latest blockbuster. Hell, that's how I was raised and I turned out normal. Well, if you count being a fan of 80s action movies normal.
Damn it...this is what I had planned too haha...make sure my kid plays the games from Pac-man onward...
Agreed. He should have used someone else's son as the experiment.
Parenting done right.
This boy will be the chosen one!
