Here’s my, probably controversial, Hot Take: Forcing your idea of someone’s sexual orientation on someone is the same as misgendering them. It’s disgusting, gross, people don’t realize it’s just as harmful, and it’s hypocritical.

This is 100% the correct response. Maybe its a generational thing , but I kind of feel like someone needs to remand the internet that two guys or girls can be close without it being a sexual relationship . That “every character is automatically at least Bi” attitude around shipping is pretty insulting , especially for…
Persona, a beloved and decades old series is homophobic for not letting a straight written protagonist romance boys?
I get where you are coming from. But implying that 2 dudes being friendly with each other should be gay also diminishes that 2 dudes can also be open with each other and trust each other in a way that isn’t “toxic masculinity”. What I mean to say is they are best friends who care about each other. Atlus definitely…
Quite right. I read Heart of Darkness in the early 90s, but it was an edition from my local library that included Chinua Achebe’s famous essay about why he thought it was a racist book. I read both, and although I didn’t necessarily agree with all of Achebe’s arguments, it certainly made me think far more critically…
I will add that this will inevitably lead to a scrubbed up and idealized vision of the past. I often think so many white Gen Xers are so vulnerable to right wing propaganda because we were fed a steady diet of 1950s nostalgia that was created in the 1970s. No mention that Mrs. C. on Happy Days couldn’t get a credit…
Aways has been...
Yeah that was the part that stuck out to me. I’m not concerned if they change some adjectives or make things less gender specific but removing mentions of major authors in English literature seems a bit much. I don’t believe Matilda set off to conquer Africa or India after reading those two authors.
No your argument is clearly in good faith. I did get a chuckle out of Hemingway still being kept but Conrad out. I love Hemingway, but boy was he a miserable person at times and it reflects in his work, perhaps even more then Conrad. Its indeed token, I’m not going to praise the estate or anything for the choice.…
I’m quite puzzled to learn that the editorial changes here are based in part on the editorial view of other literature. It’s the reference to Matilda no longer liking Joseph Conrad that is a little tough for me to parse.
I don’t like the idea of editing books without the author’s permission, but there is some precedent for this — in his own lifetime, Dahl revised the Oompa-Loompas from being African pygmies to more generic fantasy tribal people (perhaps still problematic but less so).
I understand the desire to update these stories so a new generation of kids aren’t reading about harmful stereotypes, but editing a dead author’s work is extremely gross and sets a terrible precedent. I don’t need “updated language” when I read an older book. Erasing the sins of the past is also a good way to avoid…
While I’m not a Harry Potter fan, I do enjoy gaming. This is what made me ask what the fuss is all about so I read her tweets and her essay and I didn’t take it as she’s transphobic. She didn’t come across as being afraid or have hate for the trans community. I see that she did have concerns as a biological woman,…
I mean I get what you’re saying, but the large majority of reviews are saying it’s far from “very bog standard” lol.
It’s an amazingly deep and fun game. My 9 year old and 15 year old daughters are having a blast exploring. Even my 43 year old wife, who doesn’t play games at all, loves going around and collecting things, opening up the map, etc. The long and short is, it’s probably one of the best, biggest, most fun, and most…
Its always fun when a guy who's talking about immaturity starts his comment off by calling people "bitches".
I wonder if something came out about George Lucas saying something similar, if people would still respond the same way about all of Star Wars (even if he still got royalties). Harry Potter (like Star Wars) are both a bit beyond their original creators at this point.
I find the review round more helpful in actually deciding if I should invest in the game than 1 person’s opinion. I have limited time, and this is the only gaming site I check, so I really appreciate these.
If we don’t get a code for the game, we can’t review it ahead of time. Simple as that.
If an apology ends with bro, is it even an apology?
