The thing is, even if you like mainstream, feel-good movies over innovative, violent ones like PULP FICTION, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION was also up for Best Picture that year, and even your average Grandma will agree that’s a better movie than FORREST GUMP.

“Being There” was a wonderful little movie that hit every single note that “Forrest Gump” completely missed.

Characters dying of tragedy is entirely in line with sappy nostalgia fests.

I’m tired of this debate.  Split the difference, give it to Serial Mom, and be done with it.

Hanks has more of a right to bemoan Saving Private Ryan losing Best Picture to Shakespeare in Love.

If there’s one person on these boards who would get into a bad-faith argument with himself...

Pulp Fiction being “shit,” we’ve gone full contrarian/spicy hot takes now!

I saw Pulp Fiction like 40 times in the theater (I was an 18-year-old white dude and a smartypants, the target demographic for most QT films) and I still think it holds up, but no, Shawshank Redemption is the movie that should have won. It is more accomplished by every conceivable metric* except “inserting Tom Hanks

This reply really threw me at first until I finally noticed the lack of s. haha

there’s books of the greatest movies of all time, and Forrest Gump doesn’t appear because, oh, it’s this sappy nostalgia fest.

I remember your facade cracking when you argued against an actual lawyer, and woman, who repeatedly told you how wrong you were about something, which you utterly failed at recognizing.  That was 2022's best facade cracking, I think.

It’s a movie about a semi-competent middle-class straight white male who constantly fails upward while anyone around him who has a modicum of an independent thought, including women, people of color, and disabled veterans, constantly struggle to exist in a society that unfairly accommodates and celebrates semi-competen

Sentimental, middle of the road, and high-grossing.
It is an industry award, afterall.

Maybe only in retrospect. I personally thought Pulp Fiction was a better film at the time, but Forrest Gump was a well-received crowd pleaser, so it was no surprise when it won.

Gump Fiction
“I believe I’m gonna have to get medieval on your buttocks!”

My jaw hit the floor when I realized the film literally has a scene where it’s implied God destroyed a bunch of black businesses so a pair of white guys could catch shrimp.

Forest Gump is more in the sentimental favorite category than the greatest movies of all time category.

I watched it for the first time in probably 20 years, not long ago, and was amazed at how badly it has aged, and how reactionary and conservative its politics are in portraying simple, obedient Gump as the hero, while any hippie or liberal is violent or drug abusing.

I’ll let them off Forrest Gump if they both agree to destroy all existing prints of the Polar Express.

Sorry, Tom. FG should not have won Best Picture. Gary Sinise is great (as always) but the film as a whole is pretty mediocre.
