...now I want a little pocket-watch chain for my phone.

They also thought it would be round, to fit in the watch pocket of men’s pants.

What was Leia’s failure?

In 1956 AT&T released this mockup of a pocket phone. Even back in the days of rotary phones, long before real pushbutton phones emerged in the ‘60s, they thought there would be buttons instead of a dial. They also thought it would be round, to fit in the watch pocket of men’s pants.

Yes you can see the skeleton of good ideas in the films, but the lack of writing and directorial continuity will forever be the ST’s biggest flaw.

And here’s the thing I don’t hate the ST! I love some of the characters, and some of the ideas, but it was (in my opinion of course) an absolute failure in terms of execution of a story.

Did we need a scene showing Leia’s training as a Jedi in IX to explain how she was able to save herself in VIII? Of course not. Did I enjoy watching it, anyway? Damn right I did. Who is seriously complaining that we got to see Leia wielding a light saber?

Right? Man, it feels like it’s literally been a solid decade since phone designers thought about something so simple as tactile function.

Now playing

I think it was touched on in this fan film.

I hate it when they bury this kind of stuff in tie-in materials!

Oh yeah and I remember the switch to tone based, modern phones, for the longest time you had a pulse and tone switch on the phones because some automated systems could not respond to one or the other lol

This part I love...

We bought a dumbphone for our dad because he was saying the same exact thing. Now he just whine that everyone has a nice techy phone but him. You can’t win.

I feel like phone manufacturers should be taking notes here.  Despite the novelty aspect of it, they could learn some things.

I am 41 and used these phones in my childhood. this is amazing.

Where can I order one of these for my dad who constantly screams at his smartphone, “I JUST WANT TO MAKE A FUCKING PHONE CALL!”

It’s sad he had to. The guy posted a picture of his kid watching another Mackie thing and was all “he loves you man! He can’t wait to watch Altered Carbon.” heh Shine on, you crazy diamond.
